Easterlin paradox revisited: Do increases in income bring higher levels of income satisfaction?

چکیده
In this paper, we examine the relationship between income and satisfaction in pool of developed European economies, for period 2002 2018. Although nexus most subjective well-being indicators is frequently investigated prior studies, research investigating over time non-existing. We find that during observed real disposable household significantly increased, while with remained constant. Furthermore, analysis within hierarchical linear modeling shows between-country variations affect satisfaction, not case time. Our findings support notion Easterlin paradox, which indicates long-run increases do lead to higher levels well-being. Explanations such results may be found social comparison theory, hedonic adaptation theory aspiration level theory: increasing does bring positive effects on due relevance relative absolute income, changes, or aspirations resulting from rise.

The happiness-income paradox revisited.
The striking thing about the happiness-income paradox is that over the long-term--usually a period of 10 y or more--happiness does not increase as a country's income rises. Heretofore the evidence for this was limited to developed countries. This article presents evidence that the long term nil relationship between happiness and income holds also for a number of developing countries, the easter...
متن کاملThe Easterlin hypothesis in the recent experience of higher-income OECD countries: A panel-data approach
The Easterlin hypothesis emphasizes the effect of relative cohort size on fertility. Models based on the Easterlin hypothesis have performed well in explaining time series fertility data, although these results have been for long historical time series and have typically been restricted to single country studies. These models are not adequate to determine if the hypothesis still holds and if th...

Relative Income, Happiness and Utility: An Explanation for the Easterlin Paradox and Other Puzzles The well-known Easterlin paradox points out that average happiness has remained constant over time despite sharp rises in GNP per head. At the same time, a micro literature has typically found positive correlations between individual income and individual measures of subjective well-being. This pa...
متن کاملIncome and Longevity Revisited: Do High-earning Women Live Longer?
The empirical relationship between income and longevity has been addressed by a large number of studies, but most were confined to men. For the first time we analyze a large data set from the German public pension scheme on women who died between 1994 and 2005, employing both non-parametric and parametric methods. We find that the relationship between earnings and life expectancy is similar for...
متن کاملCross-country Income Convergence Revisited
We reassess the convergence properties of the cross-country distribution of income and its determinants using the dataset constructed by Klenow and Rodriguez-Clare (2005) and our updated version of the same data. Consistent with the literature, the ergodic distribution of output per worker features separate convergence clubs. In contrast to previous ndings, productivity display convergence in ...
